Biography

Dr. Pietro Bortoletto is a Reproductive Endocrinologist and Director of Reproductive Surgery at Boston IVF. 

He specializes in all aspects of infertility care with a special interest in diminished ovarian reserve, recurrent pregnancy loss & implantation failure, Müllerian anomalies, fibroids, endometriosis, and Asherman’s syndrome.

Dr. Bortoletto was born in São Paulo, Brasil, and raised in Miami, Florida, by Brazilian & Italian parents. He is fluent in both Portuguese and Spanish. He attended the University of Miami for college and then moved to Chicago, Illinois, to attend the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

After medical school, Dr. Bortoletto moved to Boston and completed Ob/Gyn residency at the Brigham & Women's Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital Integrated Residency Program. He then completed a Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility fellowship at the Ronald O. Perelman & Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. In addition to the fellowship, Dr. Bortoletto completed a Master's in Clinical & Translational Investigation at the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences.

Dr. Bortoletto currently serves as the Interactive Associate in Chief for Fertility & Sterility and Media Editor for F&S Reports. His research interest center around making fertility treatment safer, improving the patient experience, and better understanding how to make fertility care more effective. He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers as well as multiple reviews and book chapters.

He lives in Arlington, Massachusetts, with his wife Malavika, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, and their two small children, Pia And Luca. In his free time, he enjoys playing piano & guitar and is in constant pursuit of how to make the very best cup of coffee.

Why did you choose to become a fertility expert?

I have always relished the opportunity to help others do hard things. For many, the path to family building is complex and challenging. As a fertility doctor and surgeon, my goal is to understand your priorities and make a plan to overcome these challenges together. I want this process to feel less daunting and will work to bring hope, science, and compassion to your fertility journey.

What is your approach to helping patients who are struggling?

The foundation of any helpful relationship begins with listening. When we first meet I try to listen more than I speak because I am trying to build a shared understanding of the problem at hand and what your priorities are for how to overcome them. As we develop this common ground, my goal is to bring my knowledge and expertise of what the scientific data says and help apply it to your specific situation. No cookie cutter templates but real, personalized, and thoughtful recommendations so that we have a plan to move forward.

Any advice for those who are just starting their journey?

Fertility care is a marathon, not a sprint. We will move efficiently through the parts of the work up when we can but will pay very close attention to what you and your body are telling us for what to do next and when to do it. You are in the driver's seat of this journey, my goal is to be your navigator and co-pilot.

How do you spend your free time? Any hobbies? 

When not caring for patients you can find me at home with our two little kids trying to carve out time to cook family dinner. When I am allowed to make a little noise in the house, I enjoy playing guitar and piano, particularly with other musicians.

Which music/artists do you enjoy listening to? 

The Beatles were my first musical love. I have continuously found myself falling in love with their music all over again as I have entered different stages of life. When it’s not the Beatles, it is jazz music or really great folk music.

 How would you describe your personality? 

I think most people who know me would say that I am committed and reliable. I want patients to feel that they have a real ally in their treatment from beginning to end who is going to check in, communicate, and close the loop with them.
