Only you know
which avenue is best for
your family.

For female couples, becoming moms through fertility services, like those at Boston IVF, offers many exciting possibilities.

If you choose fertility treatment, options include IUI or IVF with donor sperm and partner assisted reproduction (PAR), where both partners can be actively involved in the process.

Boston IVF has been a proud leader in fertility care for the LGBTQ+ community since 1986. That same year, we became the first fertility center in New England to help a female couple achieve pregnancy. Later, we made history again as the first fertility center to assist in a pregnancy where both partners were recognized as birth mothers on the birth certificate—a milestone for LGBTQ+ parents everywhere.

This is the start of something beautiful.

Becoming a parent is a significant and life-changing experience, no matter the path you take. Boston IVF is proud to have been helping LGBTQ+ families build their families through IVF for many years, and we can’t wait to hear your story.

Here’s what you can expect when you take the first step with us.

Initial Consultation

It all starts with a meeting with a Boston IVF reproductive endocrinologist who is an expert in fertility care for LGBTQ+ families. They will answer any and all questions you have about the family-building process.

Fertility Assessment

A fertility assessment comes next for either or both partners who are contributing eggs or carrying the baby. This involves a health history, bloodwork, and some diagnostic imaging of the reproductive organs.

Treatment and Donor Selection

Based on the fertility assessment and wishes of both partners, you’ll work with your clinical team on a treatment plan. The partners will select a sperm donor by working with one of our accredited third-party partners.

We had always discussed how we would love to be parents but thought it was such an expensive, out-of-reach dream for us.

For two moms, family building often involves fertility treatments with donor sperm, allowing one or both partners to be part of the process.

Donor Sperm

Family building with two moms requires a sperm contribution from a donor. Sperm can come from a known donor or through a sperm bank. One factor to consider is whether you may want more children later on with the same genetic father.

IUI

In IUI, we place a flexible catheter through the cervix and introduce sperm directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation, which can rely on your natural cycle or use medications to induce ovulation. If egg and sperm meet up, you could become pregnant.

IVF

An IVF cycle involves controlled ovarian stimulation with injectable medication, egg retrieval, fertilization with donor sperm and transfer of an embryo. In classic IVF for female couples, one of the two moms both provides the egg and carries the pregnancy.

Partner Assisted Reproduction (PAR)

In same-sex female couples, Partner Assisted Reproduction (PAR) enables both partners to participate in conception and pregnancy. One partner donates the egg, fertilized with donor sperm in the lab, while the other partner carries the pregnancy after embryo transfer to her uterus.
